About Fern & her miniature menagerie
Fern Levack has been drawing & sculpting animals since she was a young girl. She's always especially loved creating dogs - capturing their unique scruffy characters into a delightful figurine that holds a magical enchantment, a little heirloom that can live on forever.
Fern graduated with a Bachelor of Design (honours) from the University of Technology Sydney. She lives with her husband & son on the north coast of NSW Australia. She has two Staffordshire terriers, Daisy & Dodge, that are a constant source of amusement and distraction.
The process of making the ceramic dog
Each dog is created using photos and notes that you provide. It starts as a lump of earthenware clay & is sculpted into your dogs form. It is then 'bisqued' in the kiln at 1000° / 2000 F to harden the clay into ceramic. Once porous it's ready to be painted with your dogs unique markings. The more photos of your dog the more detail Fern can achieve!
Once painted, the dog is dipped in a pink powdery glaze which goes back to the kiln. In this final firing, the dusty layer of glaze heats up and melts into molten glass, and as the kiln cools, that liquid "freezes" into the luminous, stone-hard surface you see on the finished piece. The magical version of your treasured friend.
The time from placing your order to receiving your dog is roughly 4 weeks.
Sarah & Raff the Bull Arab, AustraliaYou captured his essence perfectly. I love it so much I cried & I told my husband all I want for gifts from now on is more ceramic Raffs in different poses haha!
Will & Edward (the silver staffy)This week this most beautiful sculpture of Edward arrived. The kindest most caring ceramic artist, Fern, created this monument to our beloved egg. I still wake each morning and listen for Edwards little feet on the floorboards as I have for the last 16 years. Now everyday I can smile and look at our naughty silver pig captured so beautifully. It's another example of how art can help us heal..even from a broken heart.
Fiona & Monty BurnDear Fern, I recieved Monty Burn & have just returned from delivering him to my sister. She cried and cried because she feels like she has him back at home again. You are incredible. You have captured Monty perfectly. Your work has bought her great comfort. Thankyou so very much!

Angie & 'Buster' the pug, United Kingdom."When we lost Buster, my heart broke in a way I didn't know it could. When I came across Fern's website I knew I had to have him made. She captured him perfectly — now we have this beautiful little figurine to make us smile again."
Kate & Boston Terrier "Porky", Australia"I was brought to tears — happy tears — for how absolutely PERFECT it is. For the first time since losing Porky I feel somewhat whole again. It is now my most cherished possession and something I will forever hold near. You are a true artist, Fern."
Kristen S., Winston & Lottie, Australia"Much to the embarrassment of all assembled, both my husband and I shed tears of joy when their exquisite faces and personalities came into view. If they'd barked when recognizing who was holding them, we wouldn't have been surprised. I don't remember being as surprised and delighted by a present in 65 years of life."
